E. Thomas Dowd has recently assumed the presidency of BCPSC, taking over for Kevin Arnold. He and the entire council have submitted the documents for re-recognition by the APA Committee on Recognition of Specialties and Proficiencies in Professional Psychology (CRSPPP). This renewal is necessary to continue APA's recognition of the specialty. The renewal includes drafting the application, submission of that application, and shepherding of the renewal through the review and approval process. Currently, the BCPSC consists of the following members: Kevin D. Arnold, Ph.D., ABPP (ABCT representative), Jerry Shook, Ph.D. (Behavior Analyst Certification Board Representative), Jon Bailey, Ph.D. (Association of Professional Behavior Analysts Representative), E. Thomas Dowd, Ph.D., ABPP (American Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology Representative, Representative to the COS, and American Board of Cognitive & Behavioral Psychology Representative), and Michael Dorsey, Ph.D. (Association for Behavior Analysis Representative).

A Definition of Specialty
The Council of Specialties (CoS) recently discussed and developed the following definition of specialty: "A specialty is a defined area of psychology characterized by a distinctive pattern or configuration of competent services to specified problems and populations. Practice in a specialty is based upon broad and general education and training in scientific psychology and the foundations of practice. Practice in a specialty requires advanced knowledge and advanced skills acquired through an accredited doctoral program and/or organized sequence of education and training in postdoctoral programs."
This is considered to be a working definition and is intended to stimulate discussion among a variety of stakeholder groups that use the term "specialty" with the intention of this definition either being adopted by consensus across these groups or a modification of this definition being adopted.
